In 2013, Beyonce released her song flawless where she featured Chimamanda’s TED talk “We Should all be Feminists” .This brought a lot of discussions on what this collaboration meant for the feminist movement. And while all this was going on, Chimammanda who began to get more media attention all over the world due to the the song, stated in an interview that

Beyonce’s type of feminism is not mine, as it is the kind that, at the same time gives quite a lot of space to the necessity of men. I think men are lovely, but I don’t think that women should relate everything they do to men

Flawless

One thing I love about Chimamanda’s response is the fact that she didn’t say Beyonce’s feminism isn’t feminism, just that it isn’t her type of feminism.

Understanding Feminism

Sadly, women today judge other women’s approach to feminism because it doesn’t fit theirs. To be clear, based on dictionary’s definition, Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. This definition does not state how we should go about doing that. It just states what it is.

Recently, actress Emma Watson’s photoshoot on Vanity Fair sparked a fierce debate on social media about what it means to be a feminist. The heated debate started off because Watson exposed part of her breasts for the shoot. The arguments ranged from “She complains that women are sexualised then sexualises herself in her own work” thus she is anti-feminist”. While another said feminism isn’t about choice but a social movement against injustice.

I struggled understanding what feminism is all about for me, but now, I see it as a choice to be whoever I want to be, however I want to do it while ensuring that my voice is heard when it matters. I was surprised even though not confused as Watson puts it that women want to tell other women how to operate their feminism. Isn’t that what our matriarchs have been fighting for all these years from society and male supremacy? That we shouldn’t be told what we can do and not do, what we can be and not be?

This is What Happens

The answer is simple, if we keep fighting against each other and saying a particular operation of feminism is superior to another, then we may as well allow society, and male supremacy take it’s cause.
